Contemplation by Hoan Kiem

Hoan Kiem is a beautiful tranquil lake right in the heart of bustling Hanoi, Vietnam. It boasts a pagoda in its centre and a very old turtle which some locals believe has mystical powers. It is not unusual to see couples and individuals sitting in quiet contemplation by the water’s side and old ladies doing their exercises.
This painting in oils, is from a photograph taken by my son, who lives in Hanoi.

Sundown at West Lake, Hanoi

Painted in oils from a photograph I took one evening, walking by the West Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam. My son and his Vietnamese wife live near here.

Watching the Fisherman, Fish

I took this photograph at Lenin Park, Hanoi, Vietnam, just to capture the peace of the moment. I find that pictures taken towards a light source, rather than with the light behind the camera, are often more effective.

Hanoi Old Quarter

Painted in oils, this pictures shows a street in Hanoi Old Quarter, Vietnam. Always bustling with motorbikes, cyclo’s, overladen bicycles with all kinds of produce or hardware, and of course, people.
Not far from the street shown here, my daughter-in-law has a coffee shop, The Cart, in Au Trieu near the Cathedral and another at Tay Ho, near West Lake.

Sundown at West Lake, Hanoi

Painted in oils, this just along the way from where my son and his Vietnamese wife live. When staying with them, we often go for an evening stroll past where these guys are sitting, on our way to Don’s Bar for refreshment.

Hanoi Market

Oil painting of Hanoi Market, Vietnam. The market starts early morning. Through the night, bicycles, handcarts, carrying poles etc. convey products from the countryside over many miles to the market where there is a riot of colour and excitement.
