Hexham Market

Watercolour of Hexham Market, at Hexham, Northumberland, just finished (until I decide it isn’t!).
In the background is Hexham Abbey, which makes a wonderful setting for the market place, dating back to the 7th Century but largely built as an Augustinian Priory in the mid 13th Century. Substantial restoration work took place in the late 19th Century.
The archway is the late 14th Century fortified gateway to the Manor and Gaol area, then controlled by the Archbishop of York.
