In watercolour, this is a sad painting because there is now no shipbuilding on the River Tyne. Swan Hunters was at Wallsend, just East of Newcastle, for very many years.
The cranes you see were dismantled about 10 years ago and shipped out to India. A whole community, which had for generations worked in the yard, had to find work elsewhere. I remember, as a lad, the festivities as a great ship was launched into the Tyne. Years later I was involved in a campaign ‘Save Our Swans’, trying to keep the yard open. We succeeded in getting some oil rig work but that finished about 12 years ago.
